Liberty Village’s 43-acres master-planned, mixed-use community is built around early 20th century industrial architecture.  Its plethora of residential, commercial and retail spaces have been brought to life from charming renovations of old factories and brick buildings, providing a gritty, yet modern atmosphere.

A thriving industrial area from the 1880s to 1970s, due in part to the proximity to train lines, the name ‘Liberty Village’ comes from the area being the former site of Toronto’s Central Prison.  Upon being freed, the prisoners had their first taste of ‘liberty’, and the name became synonymous with the neighbourhood.

The Liberty Market Building is the namesake and cornerstone of the area.  With a multi-million dollar renovation creating 300,000 sq.ft. of revitalized commercial space, the building is home to many creative professionals in design, media and technology.  Another landmark, the Carpet Manufacturing Company, is the best-preserved example of Victorian architecture in the city of Toronto.

A documentary film on Liberty Village titled “Liberty Village – Somewhere in Heaven” was produced and directed by David Sloma for Rockin' Films. It features interviews with longtime Liberty Village residents Corky Laing, Taffi Rosen photographer/videographer, as well as other key artists, business owners and workers in the area.

As one of the most dynamic and innovative economic hubs in Canada, people come to Liberty Village for its boutique shopping, variety of restaurants and artistic community.  It’s a destination for visitors seeking design stores, art galleries, hip coffee shops and urban fusion restaurants.

Liberty Village is the centre for technology and design businesses, including start-ups, film and TV productions, graphic designers, photographers and galleries. Not surprisingly, this vibrant live-work community is comprised of young artists and professionals, who give the area a vibrant, urban artistic and energetic feel.

In addition to innovative architectural renovations emphasized by public art and unique shops, the neighbourhood has many other services, including a large supermarket, video store, a pet supply store, a dry cleaner and a bank.

Whether you take transit, drive your car or plan to go for a walk, Liberty Village is an easy place to get to and from.

It’s a short walk to GO Train Exhibition and TTC bus routes. Streetcar lines on Queen and King streets provide quick and easy access to the downtown financial and entertainment districts.

If driving is your transportation of choice, you’ll find Liberty Village is accessible by the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard.  You can then easily access a network of highways leading out of the downtown core.
