The provincial government has announced significant changes to the Provincial Land Transfer Tax (PLTT), including a doubling of the rebate available to first-time home buyers, bringing it in line with the City of Toronto's rebate, and an increase in the PLTT paid on the portion of the price of properties over $2,000,000 to help pay for the increase in the first-time buyer rebate.

Toronto Real Estate Board President Mark McLean announced Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 4,672 residential transactions through TREB's MLS® System in January 2016.

This result represented an 8.2 per cent increase compared to January 2015.  "It is clear that the hand off from 2015 to 2016 was a strong one," said McLean.

Royal Bank of Canada, the country’s second- largest lender by assets, said it’s raising some mortgage rates even as the costs for funding home loans declines.

Royal Bank’s special discounted rate for its five-year fixed mortgage will rise to 3.04 per cent from 3.03 per cent effective Jan. 8, the Toronto-based bank said Tuesday in a statement. Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced changes  to the rules for government-backed mortgage insurance. Effective February 15, 2016, the minimum down payment for new insured mortgages will increase from 5 per cent to 10 per cent for the portion of the house price above $500,000The 5 per cent minimum down payment for properties up to $500,000 remains unchanged.


For example, on a $625,000 property (2015 average GTA price)


$500,000 x 5%   =   $25,000
